a large majority of the people posting comments on that youtube video of harry connick jr taking offense to the blackface on an australian tv program are absolutely clueless as to why he would take offense to it. i like the 'reverse racism' argument of 'IF 5 BLACK MEN DRESSED IN WHITE FACE NOBODY WOULD PITCH A FIT.'

what are the history and culturally assumed stereotypes associated with 'whiteface,' if any?
now, what're the history & stereotypes associated with 'blackface'?

i'm personally not offended with the use of 'blackface' or stereotyped depictions of african physical features by foreign or even domestic entities by principle, but when it's used in conjunction with demeaning black people and embodying traits that perpetuate some tired notion of 'their' supposed social role as a group of people (as with for any group of people), it's offensive. the video has six upper-class australian men (who, GUESS WHAT, three of which are not white, apparently! it's not racism if you're not white!) in black face pretending to be the jackson five.

dance for me, boy. you know that one i love, boy.

until i worked at pizza place, i forgot how many straight up racists--truly racist and otherwise chauvinistic people--populate this area. maybe closer to the city there's more acceptance because it's a (somewhat more) progressive culture rather than a suburb founded upon manufacturing, but i'm not going to pretend like racism in new orleans isn't present or isn't a HUGE FUCKING FORCE that affects everyone.

all i can do is try my best to be a good person and if i have kids, teach them the same.

my grandmother has been in the hospital for a while. mom said she's been moved from icu to a regular room. she also told me that she's talking 'crazy talk' now. saying things like, 'i was in the dentist chair for 12 hours,' 'the majoria brothers came in here and broke up a huge fight,' 'on the way home i want to stop by majoria's, because they're giving away food they had leftover from the hurricane.' last i spoke to her for an extended period, she seemed fine. between now and then, approx. 3 months ago, she's had extended stays at the hospital at least 3 times. so much has happened. i am unsure of her health.

what i'm most worried about is that this isn't gripping me. i absolutely hate to say that. i absolutely hate to say that. i'm involved with my life. with work (previously.) and the band. with my persistant sickness and mental issues. with my relationship to tourne and her recovery & return to normalcy. with the realization that i'm nearing 25 and haven't progressed out of my parents' home. a home i've hardly been at emotionally or physically except in sleep. i've hardly been a member of this family. my focus is inward. this is how i learned to cope with life alone in ruston. but this isn't ruston, and this isn't a life alone.

i want to feel something other than gloom, disappointment, and disinterest.

i want to be a good person. for myself and for those who love me.

something needs to change.

start.

a month and a few days to get our shit tight for the really big show with dan d. i'm going to practice bass at least 1 hr every day for as long as i can; learning scales & working out my fingering / strumming techniques because i need a lot of work both for performance and for songwriting. i personally want to have 3 new songs for that show (maybe 1 cover) and i want to write the basics of one of those on my own as an exercise, even if we toss it out. cut out the fat, put on a really high energy performance with better videos and a much more engaging stage presence rather than the mickey mouse shit i've been doing for the past few shows ("YALL LIKE CARS?" "YALL LIKE MONEY?" "YALL LIKE DOGS?" is all i generally say). hopefully we can finalize the space treasures & golden retriever recordings to offer as $donation cd-rs with accompanying decently printed artwork. ideas buzzing, ideaz bussing, but don't have the drive. isn't that the curse of humanity?

fffffff.

if i still feel this shitty about my position in life when i wake up, i'm drafting a 'letter of resignation' tomorrow, future job prospects be damned. the forced formality of that term, considering my place of employment, is embarrassing and hilarious.

sorry.

idea for a reginelli's commercial:

SCENE: reginelli's kitchen, elmwood

[COOK 1 is washing his hands]
[COOK 2 appears]
COOK 2: check this out, dude!
[Closeup of COOK 2's hands, holding a small bag]
COOK 2: a traveling salesman sold these spices to me! he said they'd make anything taste amazing! let's try putting it on a pizza!
[Overhead shot, sped up 4x of pizza creation, including sprinkling of herb mixture.]
[Shot of COOK 2 placing pizza into oven]
[A FLASH OF LIGHT]
[A ridiculous looking cartoon PIZZA flies out of the oven, hovering over COOKS]
PIZZA: thank you, mortals, for releasing me from my eternal slumber! yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
[PIZZA flies out of kitchen, opens door, and flies out to the mean streets of elmwood]
COOK 2: [silence]
COOK 1: [silence]
[5 seconds pass]
VOICEOVER: reginelli's pizza. no magical pizzas. just good pizza.
VOICEOVER: and salads.
VOICEOVER: and sandwiches.
VOICEOVER: conveniently located all throughout the greater new orleans area to better serve you.
[Shot of pizza flying through the night sky]
PIZZA: yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

spent like an hour looking up tvs on the internet. why are tvs so confusing these days? i just want to plug my playstation into a tv and play suikoden v. but now i have to buy a component video cable, since apparently the composite video cable i have used WITH EVERY ELECTRONIC DEVICE FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS+ is obsolete. what the fuck is hd anyway, i'm going to eat a sandwich.

hooker with a heart of copper [Jun. 29th, 2009|01:57 am]
apparently a prostitute and a trick came into the pizza place today. i didn't know at the time. this woman wearing a shirt that said "YOU'RE MY PROBLEM" or something with a care bear on it, like, a total frump, and a trucker dude. i think he delivers for the coke distributor across citrus blvd from us. this woman just sat at a table by herself, the guy just kind of at some other table. he said, supposedly, 'nasty things' about her, calling her dumb and i don't know what else, but i only found out the situation a while after they both left. she just sat there, staring into the kitchen like a creep while we were all trying to do our work, occasionally going to the phone.

she was trying to get back to bourbon street, where her boyfriend is in a hotel with money. why she was in harahan turning a trick is beyond me. she gave the trucker a blowjob for $5 and needed to afford a taxi back to the city. she called two taxi cabs who both pretty much just ran her around the block then dropped her back off in the parking lot. she sat in front of the state farm office nearby for a while looking like a vagrant.

some customer went over to talk to her at some point, and i heard that she gave the woman money. the woman then came back inside to use the phone and yellow pages, not in that order, and a taxi came. she never came back.

Nardwuar:
Were you the first guy to say "fuck" on a record, Rudy?

Rudy Ray Moore:
The very first on the face of the earth... Richard Pryor did it four years after I did. And a lot of people may want to credit Richard Pryor with being the outline for the comedians today, but I am the world's first to come out with explicit language on record, and I don't call it "dirty words" I call it 'ghetto expressions in form" of art.

Nardwuar:
And what other words did you pioneer on a record?

Rudy Ray Moore:
I used "motherfucker" and I used "eating pussy" and "sucking dicks," "bitch this," and the term "bitch" was heavy with me. And I was the world's first comedian to come out like that. Now Redd Foxx was before me but at the time he come out, he was not able to use that term.

kind of want an iphone because of the shit you can do with one extending beyond internet, strictly internet stuff, but pretty much don't want an iphone because i don't want to become physically tied to the internet in some form at all times, nor do i want to become wholly reliant upon some device that i'll push to its physical limitations. neo-luddite perhaps, or postponing the inevitable for another year. it's so tempting that i've been dreaming about iphone ownership. fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

i wonder, and i wonder, how many ska bands/fans from the mid-late 1990s thought, "this will last forever. this cannot end. ska music will never die. you will see me at 60, picking it up, on the stage with my friends. there is nothing ephemeral about this life i lead," and how many of them have hurriedly hidden their reel big fish t-shirts and everything else associated with ska music in trash cans or fires.

it's ok to like ska music. it's not ok to be ashamed of your past for superficial reasons.

creepy. i was honestly scared shitless when i played this game on the playstation when i was 12, so much so that i refused to play it after really making no sizeable progress. i wanna play it now, because the whole megami tensei series, in all of its absurd volume, seems super cool 12 years later.
